Life Safety

Update as of: February 2010

Project Overview:
The South campus Site lighting was provided through an old infrastructure which was subject to numerous outages and uneven lighting levels. The emergency telephones were located in various areas throughout the campus with limited coverage due in part to the number of available units. The existing cameras consisted of random installations at most of the residence hall entryways with exterior installations at specific locations only.

Through collaboration between facilities and the campus police, an overall plan was established to provide a more comprehensive solution for security on the entire south campus. The plan consisted of installing new exterior lighting throughout the campus with increased lighting levels. In addition to the new lighting, security cameras were planned for all exterior spaces as well as all interior entryways at each residence hall. To complete the plan new emergency telephones with a wide area broadcast system would be strategically located to provide optimum coverage. The emergency telephones were designed to activate a camera with a zoom feature to the telephone in use. In all over 500 new lighting fixtures, 73 cameras, and 28 new telephones were installed.

Current status:
Currently the lighting, interior cameras, and the emergency phones are all in the warranty phase and in full operation.  The exterior cameras and wide area broadcast system (WEBS) have been tested and are currently in the 30 day trial period.  Upon completion of the trial period, the exterior cameras and the WEBS systems will enter the one year warranty period.
