Spill Kits

Spills happen, but you can take steps to minimize spill incidents:

  • Store liquid in secondary containment bins
  • Keep containers closed when not in use
  • Use plastic coated or plastic containers whenever possible
  • Eliminate clutter, practice good housekeeping practices
  • Dispose of waste and excess chemicals in a timely manner
  • Know chemical your working with. Refer to MSDS

Large Spills:

If you have a large spill (Greater than 1 liter of flammable or volatile solvent, acid or base; Mercury greater than amount present in a standard thermometer):

  1. Evacuate the immediate area
  2. Confine. Close door and isolate the area to prevent other people from entering
  3. Call University Police at 2222
  4.  Secure the area until proper response personnel arrive

Small Spills:

  1. Remove people from the area
  2. If anyone requires first aid, see to them first
  3. Isolate/secure the spill area
  4. Open window to ventilate the area if volatile chemical spilled
  5. Proceed to clean up with spill kit

Spill kits that are located in lab are to be used by trained personnel only
