University at Buffalo students and neighbors living in the South Campus neighborhoods attended the the 3rd Annual Block Party and Safety Fair on Sunday, September 4, 2011 on the lawn of UB's South Campus, in front of Hayes Hall, including a simulated bedroom fire. UB's Environment, Health & Safety department conducted the controlled bedroom burn, demonstrating the effectiveness of smoke detectors and sprinkler systems. The Buffalo Fire Department put out the blaze.
